Ukraine should go to NATO with a “substantive partnerships,” said the NATO Secretary General.

Within NATO there is a debate about Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance, however, official Kiev has mechanisms for commitment to the Association. About it in interview to TV channel 112 Ukraine said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

“President Poroshenko raised the issue of the action plan for membership, the allies have taken this into account, but we have an internal discussion. Ukraine has the mechanisms, and it must aspire to join NATO with what we call “substantive partnership”, and together we can do more,” he said.

The NATO Secretary General noted that Ukraine now needs to focus on strengthening the defense, the task of the allies is to help the modernization of the Armed forces of Ukraine.

“Reform, modernization, fight against corruption, compliance with the NATO standards”, – said Stoltenberg.

Answering a question on possible terms of Ukraine’s accession to NATO, Stoltenberg said: “I would not speculate on a time frame, but the case of Ukraine – what they aspire to. The main message – the question of membership of decide 29 allies and Ukraine and nobody else should interfere in this process”.

NATO will continue to support Ukraine
