World granary

Across the world build EcoBank in pursuit of a way to save the rapidly disappearing natural order.

To found SpaceX and Tesla Elon Musk recently called artificial intelligence a fundamental threat to human existence. This opinion is shared by the English physicist and science popularizer Stephen Hawking and other scientists.

But now our civilization is going through an era of the anthropocene, the epoch of man in the global natural ecosystems. And yet that man is responsible for extinction of species.

For their existence, human civilization has changed the biological, chemical, physical reality, and now around the world built environmental banks that are trying to keep everything from seed to ice and milk of mammals.

In the world there are about 1.3 thousand such banks. The President of the International society for biological and environmental repositories Zisis Kostakidis says that we are losing biodiversity faster than they are able to comprehend it.

Корреспондент.net decided to tell about the largest biobanks.

Doomsday vault

The most famous biological Bank located on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen near the North pole. Svalbard global seed vault located at a depth of about 122 metres inside the mountain.

The underground shelter can accommodate more than five thousand species of major food crops, including hundreds of thousands of varieties of wheat and rice.

It was supposed that it will be impervious modern version of Noah’s ark for plants – a life raft in the fight against climate change and disasters.

Bank can fit 4.5 million seed samples

The Bank was established in 2006 under the auspices of the UN at the expense of Norway – about nine million dollars. Own compartment in the Bank of plants received each country, and the space inside is enough for 4.5 million seed samples.

Frozen zoo

In the world there are about a dozen “frozen zoos” which store genetic material of endangered animals to in case of extinction can be revived.

The largest such Bank is working in the most popular and most progressive zoo in the world – American San Diego.

It contains about 8.4 thousand specimens, among which the DNA of animals, birds, reptiles and amphibians.

Sperm, embryos, eggs and stem cells are in containers with liquid nitrogen at a temperature of 196 degrees Celsius below zero.

From live animals in San Diego is set 650 species and subspecies, almost four thousand individuals. Also the zoo has a rich collection of plants: for example, there is raised more than 40 species of bamboo, feeding big Panda and 18 variations of eucalyptus to feed the koalas.

The ark of amphibians

The international Amphibian Ark project in Chicago is an external preservation by relocation of amphibians are the most endangered class of animals indoors for their safety and collection of semen.

According to the project managers about three thousand species of amphibians are currently under threat of extinction due to human activities.

The extinction of frogs, newts and salamanders will “have a price for mankind”, which is to lose the necessary ingredients for the manufacture of many drugs.

“Every time killed some of the species of amphibians, at the same time we are losing the drug that these animals could help us do,” say the researchers.

Exotic milk

At the Smithsonian national Zoological Park in Washington holds the world’s largest collection of frozen milk exotic animals, both large and small.

The aim of the project is to find ways to feed the most vulnerable members of any kind – young.

The zoo is part of the Smithsonian Institute, which has six different centres dealing with the conservation of flora and fauna.

The Museum of ice

In a huge freezer National ice laboratory in Lakewood, Colorado, contains a total of approximately 19 thousand meters of ice core samples taken from rapidly melting glaciers and polar ice caps of Antarctica, Greenland, and North America.
