Poroshenko stressed that guarantees the respect by the authorities to those believers who decide to remain parishioners of the UOC-MP. He also guaranteed the protection of the rights of the priests and laity of the Moscow Patriarchate, which “voluntarily decide to get out from under Moscow”.

 

What is known about the Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Church

Metropolitan Epiphanius (in the world, Sergei Dumenko) was born in February 1979 in Odessa region. Included in the entourage of Filaret.

In 2003 graduated from the Kiev theological Academy and began his Ministry of the UOC of the Kyiv Patriarchate. In 2007 he was tonsured a monk with the name Epiphany. Since 2010 he is the rector of the Kyiv Orthodox theological Academy.

Constantinople was invited to participate in the unification Council of all the bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church-Kyiv Patriarchate, the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate.

Each of the invited bishops could bring two more people – one priest and one monk or layman. They also have the right to vote.

In the Cathedral was attended by over 40 hierarchs of the UOC-KP, 14 – two from the UAOC and the UOC – MP- Metropolitan Alexander of Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi and Vinnytsia Simeon. Only 190 people.

 

The reaction of the ROC MP

As is known, the Russian Orthodox Church and the Moscow Patriarchate against the independence of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and strongly criticized the actions of the Church of Constantinople and the Ukrainian authorities.

“Of the 90 bishops 88 abstained from participation in the “unification Council” aimed at the destruction of the canonical Church and the creation instead of a new Church structure with a strong dependence on the Patriarchate of Constantinople. And only two went to “the counsel of the wicked,” – said the head of the Department for external Church relations of the MP, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk.

He noted that unification Council “aimed at destroying”.

“But let’s not forget that among the 12 apostles there was one Judas. If the apostles had 90, you would expect that Jude will be six or seven, not two,” he said.

Chairman of the Synodal information and educational Department of UOC-MP, Archbishop Clement stated that took part in the Cathedral to him “no longer relevant”.

The text of the Tomos

On November 29 in Istanbul ended a three-day meeting of the Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. It finally made the decision on the granting of the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

At the end of the Church of Constantinople issued a communiqué with the results of voting, which States that the Ecumenical Patriarchate approved the draft Charter of the Ukrainian Church.

“In the context of an earlier decision of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on the autocephaly of the Church of Ukraine, and also in anticipation of providing the Patriarchal and Synodal Tomos of, the Holy Synod approved the draft of the constitutional Charter of the Ukrainian Church,” the document says.

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko in a video message said the details that were not included in the communique on the meeting the Committee approved the text of the Tomos, and the decision on convocation of the unification of the Orthodox Cathedral.

According to media reports, the text of the Tomos – three pages, it is prepared in final form and changes to it will not be introduced.

Advisor to the President of Ukraine Rostislav Pavlenko, who in those days were in Istanbul, said that Tomos provides for the full independence of the Ukrainian Church.

How UOC was going to autocephaly: key dates

– Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church was founded in 1921, when part of the Orthodox clergy in Ukraine called for the establishment of an independent Church. In the 1930s the UAOC announced the dissolution. The activity of the Church resumed in 1989.

In 1990 the Council of bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church was established by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate as an independent and separate Church of the MP. It was headed by Metropolitan of Kiev and all Ukraine.

– Head of the UOC-MP, Metropolitan Filaret attempted to gain full independence of the Ukrainian Church (autocephaly). After the failure of the autocephaly in 1992 was formed the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate.

Then, the ROC Filaret was deprived of Sanaa, after refusing to leave the post voluntarily. In 1997, the Russian Orthodox Church is Filaret excommunicated and anathematized.

In 2007, President Viktor Yushchenko stated the need for creation in Ukraine of a single local Orthodox Church.

Patriarch Filaret in 2010 announced the start of negotiations with the Moscow Patriarchate about a possible merger of the churches. However, according to the Kiev Patriarchate, MP only “simulated dialogue”.

November 30 last year, the Russian Orthodox Church has announced that Patriarch Filaret wrote to Cyril and the bishops ‘ Council letter of “apology”, and suggestions about overcoming the Church division.

On 11 October, the Holy Synod of the Church of Constantinople reversed the document in 1686 on the transition of the Kyiv Metropolitanate to the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate. Also with the heads of the non-canonical churches in Ukraine, UOC – KP and the UAOC – were removed anathema.
