The curse of the seas. Plastic kills millions of animals

The EU is going to ban straws for cocktails, sticks for cleaning the ears, disposable spoons and other plastic items. One of the reasons is too dirty sea.

Last week was the world environment day. The slogan of the campaign of 2018 was the “Fight plastic pollution”.

Meanwhile, the EU plans to ban some products of plastic, and the largest retailer of home goods, IKEA already refuses disposable plastic products.

From plastic animals suffer. Last week in Thailand Keith died, in the stomach that found 80 pieces of plastic debris weighing eight pounds.

Earlier scientists said the discovery, which well demonstrates the seriousness of the problem – a plastic bag found at the bottom of the Mariana trench.

Корреспондент.net talks about the extent of plastic pollution of the oceans.

Plastic or planet?

Popular National Geographic magazine has dedicated its new issue of this environmental problem. The publication was called the planet or Plastic?

NatGeo publishes a lot of shocking data, statistics and graphic photos showing how plastic kills wildlife.

Scientists and researchers in the magazine we hope to fill the gaps in knowledge about the long-term effects of plastic, which breaks down to microscopic particles that end up in our food chain.

“Every day, our travelers, explorers and photographers to experience firsthand the devastating effects of disposable plastics on our oceans, and the situation is getting more terrible,” – said the CEO of National Geographic Partners Gary E. Knell.

Even bears. As nature returns to Chernobyl

Earlier, the Norwegian scientist Geir Wing Gabrielsen said that in 1980 in the stomach contents of three out of 40 fulmars were found several small pieces of plastic.

“In 2013, we conducted a similar study. Then it turned out that only the three Northern fulmars in the stomach WAS NOT plastic, and it was not about a few pieces, but hundreds of fragments,” says the scientist.

Pollution plastic, pogibat millions of animals, says the scientist.

“The fact that they are entangled in networks and nets, is one thing, but what they eat it is another. Their stomach is full, and they are unable to digest it. And in the end die of hunger,” says the biologist.

Garbage sea

The great Pacific garbage patch – an example of a huge garbage dump in the ocean is so huge that it is difficult to understand. It consists of an infinite number of plastic bottles, fishing nets, plastic toys, balls and all that plastic garbage that one can imagine.

In the world’s oceans there are five floating garbage dumps of plastic. 80 percent of the content of these enormous layers of plastic garbage due to the land-based activities, only a fifth of the hits from vessels or caused by some activity of the sea.

The sixth maelstrom of debris may soon be in the Barents sea. Debris from the South of Europe together with the currents moving to the North. Of microplastics contaminate all from pole to pole, plastic found even in polar ice, and its concentration is higher than that in sea water there.

How has planet Earth and what to expect

The plastic pollution every year costs the global community at nine billion dollars. In 2014 the world was produced 311 megatons of plastic, in 2050 its production will grow to more than 1,100 megatons.

Previously it was believed that 15 percent is plastic on the beaches, 15% in sea and 70 percent on the seabed. Now, however, scientists predpolagat that at the bottom is 90 percent plastic.

Plastic – a threat to fisheries, animals and the natural environment. However, to date there are no studies that would indicate that the plastic affects human health.

“Only from 2009 to 2016, the number of species (birds and animals) in the stomach which was plastic, was increased from 130 to 800. Let’s draw a parallel. What would happen if this is our stomach was full of plastic?”, – High North News quoted Norwegian scientist Geir Wing Gabrielsen.

The facts about plastic waste

Approximately 10 percent of all produced plastics end up in the ocean.

– Since the start of mass production of plastic in 1950-e years its scope has increased dramatically.

– About eight percent of the extracted oil in the world is the production of plastic products.

– The rotation of the Earth, the wind and currents in the global oceans lead to the concentration of plastic, creating the so-called oceans of garbage.

Now known five such oceans. Areas with whirlpools, where large concentrations of debris are moved on the sea surface or just below it. Oceans of garbage is in the North and South Atlantic, North and South Pacific and in the Indian ocean.

Garbage in these areas of the world ocean consists, in particular, plastic packages, plastic packages, plastic strapping, pieces of Styrofoam, remnants of nets and ropes, bottles, bottle caps, straws, plastic filters, plastic cups and countless plastic instruments used by the fishing fleet and vessels in General.

Extinction is near. Scientists warned humanity

The largest whirlpools of garbage located in the Pacific ocean.

– The great Pacific garbage patch corresponds to the territory on land, which is three times more than Spain and Portugal combined.
