The European Commission intends to monitor the preservation of the transit of gas through Ukraine. Also the European Commissioner maroš Šefčovič noted the need for the quadripartite meeting about transit and building the Nord stream-2.

The European Commission has long sought a mandate to negotiate with Gazprom to settle the legal aspects of the pipeline passing through the territory of the EU. This was stated by Deputy Chairman of the European Commission (EC) on energy Union Maros Sefcovic in a joint press conference with economy Minister of Germany Peter Altmaier.

According to maroš Šefčovič, at the moment one of the priorities should be working to save the transit of gas through Ukraine. At the same time, he noted that the best step would be to arrange quadripartite summit, the theme of which would be gas transit to Europe.

“She could motivate all of us – Ukrainians, Russians, the European Commission – at the beginning of the intensive work on addressing these challenges,” said Sefcovic.

In turn, Peter Altmaier stressed that the format of talks should be to discuss both aspects: on the one hand, the infrastructure capacity of Nord stream-2, on the other – protection of interests of Ukraine.

“Our goal is to ensure that EU member States are, of course, and in the future could guarantee the sovereignty of Ukraine, but this includes reliable and efficient energy supply,” – said the Minister of economy.

Earlier it was reported that Denmark had decided to link the permission to build the Nord stream gas pipeline-2 with the guarantees of Russia to continue gas transit to Europe via Ukraine.
