The EU calls for the immediate release of the Deputy head of the Majlis Umerov

Detention in psychiatric hospital and psychiatric evaluation of the Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis Ilmi Umerov, against which opened criminal case for “separatism” in may 2016, represents a gross violation of international human rights standards. This is stated in statement by the press Secretary of representation of EU in Ukraine, published on Facebook.

“We urge him (Umerov – ed.) immediate release. Given the serious concerns about the state of his health, emergency, appropriate medical assistance should be provided”, – stated in the message.

As noted, the European Union has repeatedly stressed the deteriorating situation with human rights in Crimea and Sevastopol since their illegal annexation by the Russian Federation. On the rights of the Crimean Tatars had committed a serious attack as a result of the banning of the Mejlis, the self-government body of the Crimean Tatars, and the announcement of its “extremist organization”.

“We again call on all citizens of Ukraine who was illegally detained in Russia, including Oleg Sentsov and Alexander Kolchenko, convicted a year ago in gross violation of international law and elementary standards of justice, it guaranteed the safe return to Ukraine”, – said in a statement.

The European Union remains committed to its policy of non-recognition of illegal annexation of the Crimean Peninsula.

Previously, the daughter of Ilmi Umerov, the TV channel “112 Ukraine” reported that the condition of her father has improved slightly.
