The European Parliament will expedite consideration of the introduction of visa-free regime with Ukraine

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko held a telephone conversation with President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz, the press service of the head of state.

The President of the European Parliament congratulated the head of state and the Ukrainian people for the liberation of Hope Savchenko.

“This is great news for friends of Ukraine, who for two years fought for her release from Russian captivity. It is a victory of the President of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people,” – said Martin Schulz.

Petro Poroshenko expressed hope for further strong support from the European Parliament on the issue of release of Ukrainian citizens illegally detained in Russia, as well as continued pressure on the Russian side to fully implement it and other provisions of the Minsk agreements.

Martin Schulz expressed concern about the security situation in the Donbas and condemned the increasing attacks of the Ukrainian positions by Pro-Russian militants. He noted that in these circumstances, sanctions against Russia can be neither abolished nor mitigated.

The President of the European Parliament has confirmed the consistent support of the European Parliament on the issue of early granting Ukraine a visa-free regime. “The legislative proposals of the European Commission for liberalization of the visa regime with Ukraine in the European Parliament will begin tomorrow. We will do everything possible for the speedy completion of this process,” – said Martin Schulz.

The President of Ukraine urged the EU to a fair consideration of the grant Ukrainians the right to visa-free travel to the EU.

The head of state reported on the progress of Ukraine in implementing reforms. In turn, the President of the European Parliament praised the reform efforts of the President and pledged continued full support to Ukraine from the European Union.

Petro Poroshenko and Martin Schulz agreed to continue coordination on topical issues of cooperation between Ukraine and the EU in the framework of the political high-level consultations on June 27 in Brussels.

Earlier, foreign Minister of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin said that Ukraine may get visa-free regime with the European Union later for Georgia, however, the question of the suspension of the procedure is not necessary. According to him, in Brussels discussed the procedure for the rapid termination of visa-free regime in the case of serious violations, in particular the occurrence of migration crises.

We will remind, on April 20 the European Commission has announced the presentation of a legislative proposal on visa liberalization for Ukraine.

The procedure for preparation and consideration of the document in the European Parliament occupies at least a month. After approval in the EP it must be approved by the EU Council.
