The foreign Ministry sent a protest note to Russia in connection with leak of oil close to the occupied Sevastopol

The Ministry of foreign Affairs of Ukraine expressed its protest in connection with the information about the oil spills in the Black sea, which occurred near the occupied Sevastopol. This is stated in the statement released by the press service of the foreign Ministry.

“The Ministry of foreign Affairs of Ukraine expresses its deep concern about reports of the oil spill in the Black sea near the city of Sevastopol temporarily occupied Autonomous Republic of Crimea, which took place in early may and has led to significant pollution of the marine area of the spill,” – said in the message.

The foreign Ministry reminded that Ukraine, as a coastal state has sovereign rights in the Maritime areas of the occupied Crimea, and therefore has the right to demand from other countries for compliance with their obligations to prevent and overcome the consequences of such emergencies.

“The Ministry of foreign Affairs of Ukraine sent a note to the Russian side with the requirement promptly to provide, according to the UN Convention on the law of the sea and other rules of international law, all the information about the incident and the measures taken to prevent further harm to the environment”, – noted in Department.

Note, the previous time in Sevastopol oil spill occurred in October of last year.

Recall, the Crimea was illegally annexed by Russia in March 2014 after the referendum, not recognized neither by Ukraine nor the world. Including the “Crimean referendum” is not recognized by the UN.
