Prosecutor General Yury Lutsenko claims that the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch gave him a list of people who were asked not to pursue.
Not a single election. Ukrainian politicians will always give a reason to talk. At this time the distinguished Prosecutor General Yury Lutsenko. In an interview with us publication The Hill, he said that the US Ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch tried to push him and intervene in his work.
The Embassy and the US state Department statement of the public Prosecutor denied.
The attack against the representative of the main strategic partner of Ukraine looks at least strange.
Correspondent.net tried to understand what the game is Lutsenko.
The secret list
“Unfortunately, at the first meeting, the US Ambassador in Kiev (Jovanovich) gave me a list of people we should not pursue,” – said Lutsenko.
The attorney General called it unacceptable.
“No one in this country, neither our President nor our Parliament, nor our Ambassador does not hurt me to find out if there was a crime”, – he said.
Lutsenko urged to publish this list, but he is in no hurry to do it. And it is not clear why the attorney General thought about this case right now.
The reaction of the USA
The U.S. state Department called the statement of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine “direct fabrication”.
According to the Hill, the state Department currently does not provide financial support to the organs of prosecution of Ukraine. Lutsenko called “rather strange” situation with nonresponse 4 million dollars that were supposedly allocated by the American side for the bodies of the Ukrainian Prosecutor’s office, but not received as intended.
“When the political will for real reforms of successive attorneys-General have proven insufficient, we have used our responsibility to American taxpayers and redirected aid to more productive projects,” – noted in the state Department.
At the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine also denied the statements of the attorney General. “Statements of the General Prosecutor of Ukraine are not true and are intended to weaken the reputation of Ambassador Yovanovitch,” reads the response of the U.S. Embassy. Also, there are accusations of the representatives of the United States called a manifestation of corruption.
“These attacks deepen our determination to help Ukraine in achieving victory in the fight against corruption,” said diplomats and explained that the scoring of the claims in the media of the United States does not make these claims true.
Why Lutsenko does it?
According to political scientist Vadim Karasev, Lutsenko old scores with the Americans.
“Lutsenko was accused of non-public in that it inhibits or causes problems in the established and patronized by the US anti-corruption agencies that it is Lutsenko provoked the conflict between the National anti-corruption Bureau, the specialized anticorruption Prosecutor’s office, and they have a showdown in the triangle “the public Prosecutor — anti — corruption Prosecutor’s office- NABOO” instead of fighting corruption. Then, this story had a sequel, because Lutsenko was not given a US visa. He had to visit the US but by the UN. Some feeling of resentment left in him, as in Ukraine, the non-issuance of visa Lutsenko in the United States was seen as a black mark,” said the analyst.
Also we must not forget that recently, Jovanovic has acted with sharp criticism of the authorities. Urged to prevent election fraud and to prosecute for illegal enrichment, to accelerate the fight against corruption.
Therefore, the aim of the attacks on Jovanovic could be her maximum discredit in the eyes of Washington.
“Yes, Lutsenko’s statement may worsen relations between Poroshenko and his team, on the one hand, and part of the American establishment, on the other, but, as shown by the statement Jovanovic, they were already at the bottom – the sides have nothing to lose, and they crossed the red line. Thus, perhaps the current Ukrainian government is trying to find understanding with the administration of the tramp, at least on the basis of common enemies,” said the political scientist Ruslan Bortnik, Recalling that Jovanovic in Kiev has appointed the predecessor of Donald trump’s Barack Obama.
One will go
Vice-speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Oksana Syroid said that the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko must either obtain documentary evidence to the General Prosecutor of Ukraine Yury Lutsenko on the list of people not to pursue, or to send the attorney General to resign.
“President Poroshenko this morning there can be only two official document or information to confirm the statement of the attorney General Lutsenko, or the submission to Parliament about the dismissal of Lutsenko from the post of attorney General… I have much more trust in MS jovanović and the U.S. government than a non-professional and independent attorney General,” said Syroid.
The dismissal of Lutsenko urges and head of the Center of Counteraction of corruption Vitaly Shabunin.
However, there are rumors that the US Ambassador to Ukraine, Marie Yovanovitch can leave Kiev in the near future.
