The first high-capacity system for space laser communication OSIRIS will install on the platform Bartolomeo on the International space station. It will provide data transfer speeds of 10 gigabits per second.

It is reported RIA Novosti with reference to the representative of Airbus Defence and Space on Monday, April 2.

“In the framework of cooperation between Airbus Defence and Space, Institute of communications and navigation of the German centre for aviation and Astronautics (DLR) and the company Tesat-Spacecom GmbH & Co. KG the system will provide a direct transmission distance of about 1500 kilometers,” – said the source.

According to him, OSIRIS will directly communicate with several ground stations, providing Bartolomeo and experimental payload satellite communication channel with unprecedented bandwidth.

“The main task is to make OSIRIS operating system is integrated into the infrastructure of the ISS. Its implementation will allow to expand opportunities of the European Columbus module and make Bartolomeo platform for transferring large amounts of data at the station”, – said the representative of Airbus Defence and Space.

Production Bartolomeo, a new external platform payloads for the ISS, carried out in the framework of the commercial partnership between European space Agency (ESA) and Airbus. The hardware platform is developed on the capacity of the company in the German Bremen.

Now Bartolomeo is in the process of project evaluation experts of ESA and NASA. The platform, which management will implement Airbus will install on the outside of the Columbus module. Commercial maintenance module is scheduled for 2019.

Earlier it was reported that the crew of the Soyuz spacecraft went to the ISS. The station now has six people.
