The state Department spokesman said that Russia will use the suspension of the law as a reason to complain about the Ukraine.

The representative of US state Department on Ukraine Kurt Volker said in an interview with Voice of America that Ukraine will be in an unfavorable situation, if not prolong action of the law on the special status of Donbass.

“I understand the frustration of Ukrainian legislators and society. They have done the necessary steps such as the adoption of the law on the special status and Amnesty law. In turn, Russia has done nothing to end the conflict and the withdrawal of troops,” − said the special representative.

In his opinion, the law was passed, but no application of this law.

“Today is not special status. It will work only in those circumstances when the agreement when Russia withdraws its troops and will be held local elections,” added Walker.

At the same time, he is confident that there will be more harm from the termination of the law than from its continuation.

“I don’t see any harm in extending the validity of the law. Nothing will change from today until the day when the law will continue. I think there is no harm. But Russia will use the suspension of the law as a reason to complain about the Ukraine. They say that Ukraine does not want to implement the Minsk agreements. So just don’t let Russia this argument. The continuing validity of the law did not actually change,” said Walker.

We will remind, in October of last year the Verkhovna Rada adopted the bill No. 7164, which is for one year (until October 10, 2018) extends the law on the special conditions of local self-government in separate districts of Luhansk and Donetsk regions.

The document stipulated that it would enter into force only after the withdrawal of all illegal armed formations and military equipment from the territory of Ukraine.
