The candidate for head of the European Commission, Manfred Weber shared his plans to combat the gas pipeline Nord stream-2.

Member of the European Parliament from Germany and a candidate for the presidency of the European Commission, Manfred Weber, in an interview with Newsweek has said he intends to use all available tools to stop the construction of the gas pipeline Nord stream-2.

He stressed that he categorically rejects the construction of the pipeline: “This is not an economic project, but a purely political one, which is in contradiction with the interests of the European Union, so we have to block it”.

“We have at the moment already have the tools to do this (stop the construction of the Nord stream-2 – ed.), I mean the gas Directive and energy,” said Weber.

In case of realization of this project, in his opinion, “significantly affect the interests of Ukraine, and in the long term will affect the price of gas for the whole of Europe”.

The MP said that if he becomes the next Commission President, it will re-examine the tools that can be applied to prevent the construction of the pipeline.

Nord stream-2 will bypass transit States – Ukraine, Belarus, Poland and other Eastern European and Baltic countries exclusive economic zones and territorial waters of five countries – Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany.

Two branches of Nord stream-2 needs to be built before the end of 2019. They will be held off the coast of Russia through the Baltic sea to Germany.
