It is impossible to ignore environmental threats in the conflict zone in Eastern Ukraine, they may affect the civilian population and observers of the OSCE mission, said the head of the Special OSCE monitoring mission in Ukraine (OSCE SMM) Ertugrul Apakan.

“Environmental threats resulting from the conflict in Eastern Ukraine cannot be ignored, because they may affect the civilian population, who live and work in the area, as well as on the staff of the Special monitoring mission of OSCE in Ukraine”, – said the Ambassador Apakan during a meeting of the Committee of the OSCE economic and environmental activities in Vienna.

He stressed that these threats are the common challenge for all involved and for the whole region.

Apakan noted that the protection of infrastructure is extremely important for the environment and should be a shared responsibility.

Recall that the Special monitoring mission (SMM) of the OSCE in Ukraine will conduct an internal investigation in connection with suspicions in espionage in its ranks.
