The recent exchange of detainees was a step towards resolution of the conflict, but it may not pass the cost of losing the sovereignty of Ukraine, believes Kaljulaid.

Ukraine needs to look for ways of ending the war in the East, but the return of prisoners of Ukrainians can not be at the cost of losing independence. On Friday, September 13, said the President of Estonia Kersti Kaljulaid during a briefing after a meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, UKRINFORM reported.

“The war in the East and the occupation of the Crimean Peninsula – those are the things that must not be taken. And we’ll remind you about it again and again at the international level. Of course, we must look for solutions. Ukraine needs to look for solutions. The international community must move to solutions. And the recent prisoner exchange could be a notable step in this direction. But this cannot be the price of the sovereignty of Ukraine”, – said Kaljulaid.

At the same time she assured that Estonia will always support the steps of Ukraine on this path, and in the continuation of the reform process and fight corruption.

“When your country is in such a situation, it is a big challenge. And we sympathize with you. But Ukraine has no other way. And I know that the current leaders of Ukraine know about it. And the only way Ukraine can stay on the path that leads closer to the EU and NATO. This is what we discussed deeply with the President. And I am assured that we are ready to continue practical cooperation, to take practical steps. And we ask, where exactly do you need our help, in your opinion. And we’ll provide it at the international level”, – said the President of Estonia.

In turn, the President Zelensky said that he highly appreciated as a personal position Kersti Kaljulaid, and in General the Estonian position on supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and condemning Russian aggression. He also thanked for helping in various fields, especially in the rehabilitation of wounded Ukrainian military.

We will remind, several days earlier Zelensky received the credentials of ambassadors from five countries, including Estonia.

Also today in Kiev Zelensky addressed the annual meeting of the Yalta European strategy (YES) held from 12 to 14 September 2019 in Kiev. More than 400 leading politicians, diplomats, businessmen, social activists and experts from 26 countries take part in the conference organized by the Yalta European strategy (YES) in partnership with the Victor Pinchuk Foundation.
