The worship of the Greek Catholics in Hagia Sophia, in the opinion of the honorary Patriarch, may cause inter-religious conflict.

Honorary ptsu Patriarch Filaret urges the head of the UGCC his Beatitude Sviatoslav to withdraw from conducting the Liturgy in the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Kiev. This Patriarch on Saturday, February 23, wrote on his page in Facebook.

He noted that the Liturgy of the Church in the Cathedral might lead to a conflict between Orthodox and Greek Catholics and to prevent inter-confessional dialogue in Ukraine.

The Patriarch also suggested that this event, to provoke, can use Russia to hurt the Ukrainian people and urged Sviatoslav to abandon the pilgrimage and Liturgy in the Hagia Sophia.

He also expressed hope that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church will continue to develop its good relations in the spirit of mutual respect and love and together to serve the Ukrainian people.

Meanwhile, the press service of the DNC on February 23 reported that the head of the Church Metropolitan Epiphany February 19 sent the Head of the UGCC his Beatitude Sviatoslav’s letter, “regarding issues concerning both churches.” In the UGCC in response said that Sviatoslav, who is now abroad, has reviewed the letter. Earlier, the head of the UGCC his Beatitude Sviatoslav announced the holding of the divine Liturgy in St. Sophia Cathedral in Kiev on the occasion of the feast of the Annunciation on April 7.
