The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution Problem of the militarization of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol (Ukraine), as well as parts of the Black and Azov seas, which contains a paragraph about the captured Russian nuclear facilities and infrastructure in the occupied territory. For the resolution voted by 63 countries, against – 19 abstained – 66.

It is noted that a resolution with that title, the UN General Assembly adopts second time, however, the present document is complemented by a fundamentally new provisions.

In it, in particular, calls on Russia “to refrain from efforts to expand their jurisdiction at the nuclear facilities and infrastructure in Crimea”, and also expressed concern about the use of captured Ukrainian enterprises of the defense industry.

The resolution reminds Russia about the ban to call in the army the state of the occupant persons from the occupied territories, “including by means of pressure or propaganda aimed at securing voluntary enlistment”, condemns use of education to bring to the army and urged Moscow “to halt this illegal activity.”

The document also paid attention to socio-economic aspects of the Russian aggression.

“Security problems and the buildup of military forces in the Black and Azov seas in the future destabilisateur the economy and the social sphere, especially in the coastal regions of Ukraine”, – the document says.

The UN General Assembly expresses concern at the deliberate obstruction of movement through the Kerch Strait, in particular, “under the pretext of military exercises” in the Black and Azov seas and Kerch Strait.

The current resolution, like previous ones, condemns the construction of a bridge across the Kerch Strait, which contributes to the militarization of the Crimea and “limits the size of vessels that can reach Ukrainian ports on the Azov sea coast”.

The buildup of Russian military presence in parts of the Black and Azov seas and the pursuit of merchant ships “further worsens the economic and social situation in the neighbouring Donetsk region, which has already suffered losses from the occupation of the Crimea”, – the document says.

The UN General Assembly has also condemned the visit of Russian officials in the Crimea and calls upon all States-UN members to refrain from visits to the region without coordination with Ukraine.

In addition, the resolution calls upon all member States to cooperate with the UN “for a speedy end to the Russian occupation of Crimea and to refrain from any agreements with Russia in the Crimea who do not meet this goal.”

The draft resolution prepared by 39 countries, including USA, UK, Germany, France, Ukraine, Italy, Sweden, the Baltic countries, Hungary, Bulgaria and others.

Recall that the prior resolution of the same name UN General Assembly adopted on 18 December 2018. The document notes about the security threat that Russia poses to Ukraine, the black sea region and throughout Europe to the deployment in Crimea of troops and weapons, including aircraft and missiles, capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. The first time that a direct appeal to Russia immediately withdraw from Crimea with their troops and to cease immediately its temporary occupation.

In response to a resolution in Moscow said that the Russian Federation is against “open-minded campaign” and expressed regret that he had not adopted their amendments to the resolution.
