According to experts, the conflict in the Donbass destroyed ecosystems on the territory of at least 530 thousand hectares, including 18 nature reserves with a total area of 80 thousand ha. in addition, injured 150 thousand hectares of forests – is still in the area adjacent to the combat zone, blaze 12 thousand forest fires.

It is also reported that the region contains a 5.5 thousand industrial enterprises and infrastructure that if damaged will be a source of significant harm to the environment.

“Donbass is on the verge of ecological disaster, the reason is – the pollution of air, soil and water as a result of breaks of large amounts of ammunition and the flooding of industrial enterprises. It is urgent to assess the environmental damage caused by armed conflict, and to minimize it”, – said the expert of UNEP Leila Urakaeva.

The UN insist that environmental protection should be part of efforts for preventing conflict and strategies for peace.

Earlier in the Donbass command OOS, SMM OSCE and the Ukrainian side of the JCCC conducted repair work on the dam of the phenol plant.

The OSCE also reported about the environmental threat in the conflict zone in Eastern Ukraine.
