The organization is urged to withdraw draft laws on religious themes.

The world Council of churches urged the Ukrainian leadership to withdraw the draft laws on religious themes that may be adopted by the Verkhovna Rada today. Secretary-General of the pastor Olav tveit of the world Council of churches sent a letter to President Petro Poroshenko.

We are talking about the draft laws # 4128 “On amendments to the Law of Ukraine “On freedom of conscience and religious organizations” and draft law No. 4511 “On the special status of religious organizations, senior centers are in a state that recognized by the Supreme Rada as the country-aggressor”.

In the appeal to the Ukrainian leadership, the pastor indicates that the impending changes in the laws that relate to freedom of conscience in religious organizations, as well as introducing some of them special status, “threaten the principle of freedom of religion and equality of all churches and religious communities in Ukraine.”

The pastor is confident that these amendments run counter to efforts to develop democracy, and may also cause a new wave of tensions in the Ukrainian society.

“We are convinced that these two bills are inconsistent with the efforts of the Ukrainian efforts to develop democracy. We urge that these negative consequences, the bills were withdrawn”, – summed up the world Council of churches Olav Tveit.
