The autocephaly of the UOC and the annulment of the anathema of Filaret

In Istanbul, at the meeting of the Synod, chaired by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I”, it was decided to confirm the decision that the Ecumenical Patriarchate proceeds to the procedure of granting autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church”, reads the official statement.

The Synod decided to “restore from this point the stavropegic of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Kiev” and “to receive and consider petitions for appeal of Filaret Denisenko, Macarius of Miletich and their followers”.

At the same time decided to deprive of legal force the decision of the Synod in 1686 on the right of Moscow Patriarch to appoint Metropolitan of Kiev.

The Holy Synod also cautioned against the seizure and appropriation of churches, monasteries and other facilities.

This statement was preceded by a two-day discussion of “Ukrainian issue”. The participants of the Synod heard the report of the Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarch in Kiev, which was appointed in September to prepare for the creation in Ukraine of a local Church.

The decision on granting the Ukrainian Church of the Tomos of autocephaly has not yet been taken.

3. To receive and consider petitions for appeal of Filaret Denisenko, Macarius of Miletich and their followers caught in the split is not for dogmatic reasons, in accordance with the canonical prerogatives of the Patriarch of Constantinople to receive petitions from the bishops and other clergy from all Autocephalous Churches.

Thus, the above-mentioned canonically restored to their hierarchical or priestly titles, and their followers were restored to communion with the Church.

4. To cancel the legal obligation of the Synodal letter in 1686, issued by the circumstances of the time, which gave the right through the principle of economy of the Moscow Patriarch to appoint Metropolitan of Kiev, elected by the Assembly of the Clergy of his diocese, which will commemorate the Ecumenical Patriarch as First Hierarch at any celebration, proclaiming and affirming its canonical dependence on the mother Church of Constantinople.

The following steps

After the current decisions of Constantinople in Kiev to be held Council with the participation of the hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Kyiv Patriarchate, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church avtokefalnoj and the part of the clergy of the UOC-MP, which supported the request for Tomos.

The task of the Cathedral is to unite the churches into one and to elect its Primate. Only after that Patriarch Bartholomew will present the newly elected Primate of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Church the Tomos of autocephaly.

To do this, Ukraine can continue to work the Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which organize the Church.

Now the most probable applicant for a post of the future head of the local Church called the current Primate of the UOC-KP Filaret.

The Russian Orthodox Church in 1997, was subjected to anathema. Filaret in those years headed the part of the hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, separated from the Russian Orthodox Church and started the establishment of an independent Ukrainian Church. The rest of the Orthodox churches of the world it did not recognize.

Kiev promises not to seize the temples

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko called the granting Ukraine of the Tomos of autocephaly and the issue of independence of the state and its national security.

He added that the decision of the Synod on the granting of autocephaly to Ukraine means “the fall of the Third Rome as an ancient concept application of Moscow for world domination”.

“Autocephaly is part of our statist Pro-European and Pro-Ukrainian strategy, which we consistently implement in the last catrice years and, I emphasize, will continue in the future”, – said Poroshenko.

The President noted that the government will respect the choice of those who decide to remain in the Church structure that will preserve the unity with the Russian Orthodox Church.

“But also guarantee that the state will protect the rights of those priests and laity of the UOC-MP who voluntarily decide to get out of Moscow, together with other Orthodox to create a Unified Ukrainian local Orthodox Church”, – said Poroshenko.

The President also said that if anyone would call to capture the power of the temple or monastery, it is called “Moscow agents”.

Moscow’s Reaction

The Russian Orthodox Church said that the decision of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, “the legalization of secession.”

“Constantinople their actions crosses the red line and dramatically breaks the unity of the world Orthodoxy,” – said the press Secretary of the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Cyril Alexander Volkov.

According to Volkov, the Russian Orthodox Church “will be forced to break off the Eucharistic communion with the Patriarchate of Constantinople” after his decision to remove the anathema from Filaret.

The UOC-MP also consider the decision of Constantinople about the removal of the anathema with the head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate Patriarch Filaret and the head of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church Patriarch Macarius “absolutely unlawful”.

“This solution is completely non-canonical, because this territory does not belong to the Patriarchate of Constantinople, how he can remove anathema? He has no Canon law. I think that such actions of Patriarch Bartholomew I gotta put the anathema,” – said the press Secretary of the UOC-MP Clement.

Even after the appointment of the Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarch to Ukraine of the Russian Orthodox Church partially ceased communion with Constantinople.

Moscow believes that Constantinople encroaches on their canonical territory and insist that the Ecumenical Patriarch has no right to grant autocephaly to the Ukrainian Church.
