Secretary of the national security Council and defense Oleksandr Turchynov met with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the headquarters of NATO in Brussels. This was reported on the official website of the NSDC.

“During the talks the sides discussed the issues of counteraction to the Russian aggression in Eastern Ukraine, and hybrid threats that now face our country,” – said in the message.

According to Turchynov, in comparison with 2014, today in Ukraine is a qualitatively new army that is able to defend the country.

“Given the challenges currently facing the state, a significant portion of state budget funds aimed at the defense and security of Ukraine. Total expenditure on security and defense in 2017 exceeded 5% of GDP,” he said, adding that the situation is similar with the budget for 2018.

In addition, the interlocutors discussed the issue of reforming the security sector and defense of Ukraine, the transition to NATO standards and complexity along the way.

Turchynov thanked Stoltenberg for his recent statement at the International forum on security on November 17 in Halifax that NATO’s door open to Ukraine and Georgia, noting that Ukraine to advance on the way to the Alliance “focused on reform, modernization of the security sector and defence, the fight against corruption and strengthening democratic institutions.”

The NSDC Secretary noted that a new important stage of cooperation between Ukraine and NATO may be the accession of our country to the Program’s advanced capabilities. “According to the conclusions of the military experts of the partner countries – he added that Ukraine meets all the criteria that must be met by the potential participant”. He noted that Ukraine is interested in holding the meeting of the Commission Ukraine-NATO at the level of heads of state and government during the NATO summit in Brussels in July 2018.
