Ukraine is losing ground because of inflation

Ukroboronprom has dropped in the global ranking of SIPRI in two positions. The researchers attribute this to inflation.

The Stockholm international Institute for peace studies (SIPRI) published its annual rating of the hundred largest military-industrial companies in the world for 2017.

The study says that the volume of arms sales in this group decreased by 6.9 per cent to 27.9 billion dollars. The sales volume of these companies in 2017 accounted for seven percent of the total rating.

Ukraine is represented in the rating of one company – the state concern Ukroboronprom. Its sales of weapons compared to 2016 fell 11 percent to one billion dollars. The study says that this is due to inflation.

During 2012-2016 Ukraine took ninth place among the countries-exporters of weapons in the world, but in the previous five-year period and is in fourth place.

From a report by SIPRI, it follows that the main importer of Ukrainian weapons was Russia, which bought 23 percent of all arms exports, Ukraine. In second place is China, followed by Thailand.

A year earlier, the Stockholm Institute released a study in which Russia was the largest buyer of arms of Ukraine.

Production and arms trade grows

In the latest SIPRI report says that last year the volume of sales of arms and military services of the 100 largest military-industrial companies of the world amounted to 398,2 billion, 2.5 percent more than the year before.

The Americans continued to lead in the SIPRI rating: the top 100 includes 42 companies from the United States. In 2017, the total volume of arms sales by American companies rose by two percent to $ 226,6 billion, or 57 percent of the total.

The volume of sales of Russian companies accounted for 9.5 percent of the total in the rankings, allowing Russia for the first time in this century to become the second largest manufacturer of arms in the world, surpassing the UK.

The annual turnover of ten largest Russian companies rose by 8.5 percent to 37.7 billion. As the largest producer and seller of weapons in Russia’s Almaz-Antey has risen in the top 10 global companies.

The total turnover of the European defense industry on the world market increased by 3.8 percent and amounted to 2017 94,8 billion dollars. The largest weapons manufacturer in the Western Europe remains the UK, followed by France.
