The restriction will not apply to biodegradable plastic bags lightweight plastic bags.

The Verkhovna Rada in the first reading supported the draft law, which Ukraine has banned plastic bags, according to the website of the Parliament on 12 November.

Ban distribution of plastic bags in retail and the restaurant industry in the thickness to 50 microns is provided from 1 January 2022.

This restriction will not apply to biodegradable plastic bags lightweight plastic bags with a width up to +225 mm (without side folds), depth 345 mm (including side gusset) length 450 mm (including handles) designed for packing and (or ) transportation of fresh fish and meat and their products, and bulk products, ice, which are distributed in retail outlets as the primary packaging.

It is interesting that every year, every Ukrainian uses about 500 plastic bags, said in an explanatory note to the bill.

For comparison: in the EU the figure is closer to an average of 90 packages.

In the Ukraine, only about 6% of the total number used by the person packages a year will be sent for recycling.

The main alternative to plastic bags in the world there are biodegradable bags.
