In recent years, the Ukrainian underground gas storage has been used only 50% of its capacity.

Ukraine and the European Union started a project demand forecasting of an underground gas storage (UGS) for the next 20 years and explore the possibilities of using Ukrainian storage facilities in this market, the press service of Naftogaz.

According to her, on the basis of the obtained results will be developed several strategic scenarios for the optimal use of Ukrainian UGS.

To implement the project will be a consortium that includes French operator Storengy UGS (“daughter” ENGIE) and international law firm CMS Cameron McKenna Olswang Nabarro.

“This project is funded by EU and aims to develop a sustainable economic approach to the use of Ukrainian underground gas storage in the context of European and Ukrainian energy market”, – stated in the message.

In Naftogaz say that the project team will analyze which of the existing gas storage facilities necessary for the effective operation of the gas transportation system of Ukraine, which will contribute to the implementation of the law On natural gas market and the implementation of commitments of Ukraine regarding separation from NAC functions of gas transportation.

“In recent years, the Ukrainian underground gas storage has been used only 50% of its capacity and, in this regard, Ukraine intends to increase the level of their use, in particular, by developing attractive access conditions for international clients,” – said the NAC.

Recall that Kyiv has the largest UGS facilities in Europe – 12 underground gas storages of the country with a total capacity of 31 billion cubic meters.
