The Ecumenical Patriarchate approved the draft Charter of the Ukrainian Church, “in anticipation of granting the Patriarchal and Synodal Tomos of”.

Metropolitan Filaret, who was the head of the UOC-MP, tried to obtain complete independence of the Ukrainian Church (autocephaly), but failed. Then in 1992 was formed the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Kiev Patriarchate was founded. ROC Filaret was deprived of Sanaa, after refusing to leave the post. In 1997, the Russian Orthodox Church Filaret excommunicated from the Church and anathematized.

The Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church was founded in 1921, when part of the Orthodox clergy in Ukraine called for the establishment of an independent Church. In the 1930s the UAOC announced the dissolution. The activity of the Church resumed in 1989.

In 2007, President Viktor Yushchenko spoke about the need to establish a unified Ukrainian local Orthodox Church.

Patriarch Filaret in 2010 announced the start of negotiations with the Moscow Patriarchate, whose ultimate goal was to become the United Church. However, according to the Kiev Patriarchate, they just “simulated dialogue”.

November 30 last year, the Russian Orthodox Church has announced that Patriarch Filaret wrote to Cyril and the bishops ‘ Council letter of “apology”, and suggestions about overcoming the Church division.

However, Patriarch Filaret said that the words about forgiveness are the traditional appeal of prayer, and not an admission of guilt. The UOC-KP said about the readiness to dialogue with the ROC, only for the recognition of autocephaly, but not reunification.

– April 17, 2018 President Petro Poroshenko said he plans to appeal to Constantinople to issue a Tomos of unified Orthodox Church in Ukraine and to grant autocephaly. The letter was signed by representatives of the two unrecognized in Ukraine churches (UOC-KP and UAOC).

– April 22 Ecumenical Patriarchate has taken this appeal into consideration and launched the process of granting autocephaly of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine.

On 11 October, the Holy Synod of the Church of Constantinople reversed the document in 1686 on the transition of the Kyiv Metropolitanate to the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate. Also with the heads of the non-canonical churches in Ukraine, UOC – KP and the UAOC – were removed anathema.

– 15 Oct ROC responded with a Eucharistic communion with the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople.
