World food prices in 2017 rose for the first time after five years of decline in a row. This was stated by Food and agriculture organization of the UN (FAO), reports Prime.

As noted, the index of food prices FAO by the end of 2017 amounted to 174,6 points, which is 8.2% above the level of 2016. The organization notes a drop in sugar prices last year, while prices for dairy and meat products rose sharply year on year. Prices of oilseeds and grain also rose, but less dramatically. In December, the index declined to 169,8 points, 3.3% the previous month.

The price index for sugar by the end of 2017 dropped to 227,3 points, or by 11.2% compared to last year. FAO explains the dynamics of such a record crop in Brazil, which is the largest manufacturer in the world, as well as the significant recovery of production in India and Thailand. In December, the index fell by 4.1% to 204 points.

The price index for dairy products by the end of 2017 jumped by 31.5% and amounted to 202,2 points. The biggest cost increase was observed for butter, followed by whole milk powder and cheese. Prices for skimmed milk powder remained stable for the year. In December, the index fell by 9.7% in November, to 184.4 points, the decline marked the third month in a row.

Prices for meat products in 2017 rose to 9%, up 170 points to last year. The most expensive lamb, followed by pork, poultry and beef. In December, the indicator has slightly decreased compared to the previous month and amounted to 171,6 points. Price quotations for beef has declined over this period, says FAO, due to the rising demand in domestic and international markets.

Grain prices at the end of 2017 increased by 3.2% to of 151.6 points, and in December decreased slightly to the previous month and reached 152,7 points. Sufficient supplies and slow sales contributed to the decline in prices in this sector, while maize prices strengthened slightly against the background of problems with the weather conditions in Argentina.
